Cancelled Opti Discovery Session 2 – 2020

Overview

Providing youth with the opportunity to learn about and experience the exciting sport of sailing! These three-day courses are offered to youth ages 8- 17. The sailing school uses Optimist Sailboats for youth 8-12 and the Club C420 for ages 12-17. These types of sailboats are used throughout the country as an introductory boat for youth.

What will youth learn?

The Sailing School employs US Sailing Certified sailing instructors to teach sailing to youth in an open learning environment. Youth start their learning with land based lessons, followed by on the water demonstrations, and finally open water practice. Safety is SCSS’s number one priority. Our US Sailing Certified staff are CPR/First Aid trained and are always on the water aboard a powerboat supervising and coaching.

Topics Covered:

  • Appropriate water safety equipment and safe boating practices
    • Type II or III coast guard approved PFD
    • Determine safe weather conditions for sailing
    • Importance of having a float plan
    • Boating rules of the road
  • Parts of a sailboat and how to properly set up the boat
  • Points of Sail (how to sail upwind, downwind, and across the wind)
  • Tacking and Jibing
Objectives

At the end of this three day program, sailors will gain on the water confidence and an understanding of how to set up a sailboat, lauch and land their boat, and the skills to sail a boat across the wind. When youth complete the course wanting more, they can continue their learning by singing up for a week long OPTI or C420 Explorer program.

What to Bring
  • Type II or III US Coast Guard Approved PFD (SCSS has a limited supply – let us know ahead of time if you need one.)
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses/Sun hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Boat shoes (closed-toed with heel strap)
  • Raincoat/pants
  • Warm non-cotton layers

For Ages 8 – 12  (Students ages 12–17 should take the Club 420 Sailing Discovery Course)

Description:

We are located at the south end of 1st Street in Riverfront Park, just outside the gate to the marina.  There are a couple of buildings and many sailboats in the area.  Parking is available on 1st Street.

Drop Off & Pick Up of Kids:
Staff will be on hand to scan your ticket at drop off and pick up of your student.  Parents/guardians in vehicles can now drop off kids without leaving your car!  Please print or bring up your ticket on your cell phone to speed the process.  Ticket and ID will be required for pick up of youths.

Adult Students:
The school is your primary meeting point, but your instructor may give you alternate locations for parking and lessons based upon boat locations in the harbor.
